Hachiman transforms the mundane to the multifaceted through the power of thoughtful design.

Nestled in the small riverside town of Gujo Hachiman in Japan’s Gifu prefecture, the family-owned company reimagines household objects—the ones typically hidden away when not in use.

Everything is considered, from proportions and materials to construction and delightful details.

In the hands of Hachiman designers, a utilitarian bucket becomes a colorful, lidded container that doubles as a stool or a side table, a cooler or a planter.

A traditional watering can gains precision through a widened spout that is grooved with channels for sprinkler-like flow and superior control.

These award-winning designs are the best of their kind, destined to become trusted companions, indoors and out.

Hachiman Garden Beetle Watering Cans

Hachiman reimagines the watering can with a widened spout that is grooved with channels for sprinkler-like flow and superior control. The circular opening in the top handle is designed to hold a garden hose for easy refilling. Crafted in Japan to last a lifetime, the Garden Beetle is a winner of the Red Dot Design Award, Japan's Good Design Award, and the iF Design Award. Described by The New York Times and Wirecutter as the “perfectly balanced bucket waterer."

Meet the designers

Chilewich

Sandy Chilewich started the company because nothing on the market behaved the way she wanted a floor covering to behave. The answer was to extrude yarn and weave it on looms in the company's own mill in Georgia, and the result is a material that looks like textile and performs like something much tougher.

The yarn does not absorb, which is the whole proposition. A floor mat can live inside a door through a wet winter. A table mat can take a spilled glass of red and be rinsed under a tap. Nothing stains because nothing soaks in. The weaves do the aesthetic work: basketweave, mini-basketweave, bamboo, shag, in colourways that read as texture rather than pattern from across a room.

This is why the material turns up in restaurants, hotels and offices as often as in houses. It takes traffic that would flatten a wool rug, and it keeps looking deliberate rather than hard-wearing. In a home it earns its place in exactly the spots where other textiles fail: entryways, kitchens, under a dining table, a covered porch.

Care is a damp cloth, a vacuum, or a hose outside. Nothing goes in a washing machine or a tumble dryer, and nothing needs to. Put an anti-slip underlay beneath anything on a hard floor. The questions below cover cleaning, outdoor use and cutting to fit.
