Modern Sectionals

A sectional is a commitment. It is usually the largest object anyone buys for a house and it decides how a room is used for the next decade, which is why the measuring matters as much as the choosing.

What it buys you is the one piece of furniture people genuinely lie on. A chaise end turns a sofa into somewhere you spend a Sunday. An L against two walls gives a room an obvious centre. Depth is the number that decides comfort: around 36 inches and up invites lounging, closer to 32 keeps it upright and better for conversation and for smaller rooms.

Then the materials you touch every evening. Bouclé, which is the fabric nobody walks past without putting a hand on. Performance weaves that take a household with children and dogs. Leather, stiff for a season and then shaped to whoever sits in the same place every night. Solid oak and walnut legs that lift the whole mass off the floor and stop it reading as a block.

Measure the route in before you measure the room: doorways, the turn at the top of a staircase, the lift. Modular configurations exist partly because of that turn. How Do I Know Which Way My Sectional Should Face?

Chaise orientation is named for where the long section sits when you are looking at the sofa from the front. A right-arm facing chaise is on your right as you look at it. Decide by the room, not the diagram: the chaise should run along the wall with less traffic, and should not block the route into the room.

What Size Sectional Fits My Room?

Allow at least 36 inches of walkway on any side people pass, and leave the chaise end clear by 24 inches so it is usable rather than decorative. Measure the diagonal of your doorway and stairwell before anything else; modular sectionals arrive in sections and solve this, which is often the real reason to choose one.

Can a Sectional Be Reconfigured Later?

A true modular one can, and that is its advantage over a fixed frame. Individual seats, corners and ottomans connect with brackets and can be rearranged or added to when you move. A fixed sectional with an integrated chaise cannot be changed, and is usually lighter and less expensive for it.

Is a Sectional Better Than Two Sofas?

A sectional seats more people per square foot and suits a room oriented towards one focal point. Two facing sofas suit conversation and a symmetrical room, and are far easier to rearrange or split between rooms later. In a small space a sectional usually wins; in a formal room it rarely does.
