Pappelina Rugs

A Pappelina rug is woven in Sweden from plastic yarn, which sounds like a compromise and turns out to be the reason people own four of them. You can put the small ones in a washing machine. You can take the large ones outside and hose them down. Nothing soaks in, so nothing stains.

That changes where a rug can go. A runner in front of a sink, a hallway that takes wet boots, a terrace, a boat, a child's room, a kitchen where things get dropped. The weave is flat enough that doors clear it and chairs slide over it, and the colours are bright in a particularly Scandinavian way: clean, graphic, slightly sweet, and cheerful without tipping into novelty.

The patterns are mostly geometry, which is why they sit under almost any furniture without competing. Narrow runners do the hardest work, the long thin spaces where a wool rug would be an expensive mistake. Larger formats hold an open-plan room together without adding visual weight.

They will fade slowly in constant direct sun, as any dyed material will, so a rug living on a south-facing terrace is a seasonal thing rather than a decade-long one.
