A bedroom is the one room that does not have to perform for anyone else. It can be the quietest space in the house, and the furniture in it should be chosen for how it feels at seven in the morning rather than how it photographs.

That argues for real materials. Copeland works American cherry, walnut and maple in its own Vermont factory with low-VOC water-based finishes, which matters more here than anywhere else in the house. Greenington builds in Moso bamboo with formaldehyde-free adhesives, harvested in five years instead of fifty and harder than red oak when it is laminated into boards. Ethnicraft oak arrives with the grain open and the finish oiled, so a mark can be dealt with by hand rather than by a specialist.

A low platform bed makes a small room read as larger because it leaves more wall showing. A tall upholstered headboard does the opposite and becomes the thing the room is arranged around. Pale maple keeps a room light; walnut makes it closer and warmer. Both are correct, and the choice is about which end of the day you are furnishing for.

Keep at least 24 inches clear beside the bed, and 30 if a door opens into it. Nightstand height should sit within a couple of inches of the mattress top, which is the detail most often got wrong. The questions below have the sizing.
