HOUE Furniture

HOUE is Danish, and it exists to answer a specific question: what does good outdoor furniture cost if you take the shipping air out of it? The answer is flat-pack. These pieces arrive in slim cartons and you fit the legs, backs or slats yourself, which is most of the reason the prices look the way they do.

What you get for that is Scandinavian outdoor design in powder-coated aluminium and steel, often with bamboo tops and seat elements, in a palette that is muted where Fermob is bright. The shapes are simple and current, and a good deal of the range stacks, which is the practical argument for it on a balcony or a small terrace where furniture has to get out of the way.

Assembly is ten or fifteen minutes a chair with the hardware supplied. The one trick worth knowing is to start every bolt before tightening any of them, which keeps the frame square.

The frames are built to stay outside. The bamboo is treated for outdoor use and will last considerably longer if it is oiled once or twice a season, because untreated outdoor bamboo greys and roughens.
