About the...

Canopy Placemat

Exploring the interplay of pattern and color, Canopy is a bold in scale and versatile in use. The Chilewich design team developed this double weave to make each placemat a canvas, activating the richly textured surface with petal-like forms and multi-tonal hues that appear to radiate from whatever is placed at the center.

Meet the designers

Chilewich

Sandy Chilewich started the company because nothing on the market behaved the way she wanted a floor covering to behave. The answer was to extrude yarn and weave it on looms in the company's own mill in Georgia, and the result is a material that looks like textile and performs like something much tougher.

The yarn does not absorb, which is the whole proposition. A floor mat can live inside a door through a wet winter. A table mat can take a spilled glass of red and be rinsed under a tap. Nothing stains because nothing soaks in. The weaves do the aesthetic work: basketweave, mini-basketweave, bamboo, shag, in colourways that read as texture rather than pattern from across a room.

This is why the material turns up in restaurants, hotels and offices as often as in houses. It takes traffic that would flatten a wool rug, and it keeps looking deliberate rather than hard-wearing. In a home it earns its place in exactly the spots where other textiles fail: entryways, kitchens, under a dining table, a covered porch.

Care is a damp cloth, a vacuum, or a hose outside. Nothing goes in a washing machine or a tumble dryer, and nothing needs to. Put an anti-slip underlay beneath anything on a hard floor. The questions below cover cleaning, outdoor use and cutting to fit.
