About the...

Fortis LED Wall Sconce

The Fortis wall sconce is a great example of the collaborative design process. The initial concept from the New York based Desiron was refined over many iterations. We then worked with the local Southern California artisan glass company Siemon & Salazar to achieve a very specific bubbled glass lens that diffuses the light. It is a strong and sophisticated display of three elements: a piece of metal, a piece of wood, and a piece of glass all beautifully showcased in light.

Meet the designers

Cerno

Cerno was established in 2009 by three friends in Laguna Beach, and it still designs and builds in California. That is not a provenance detail for its own sake: it is why the walnut on a sconce is matched rather than random, and why a fixture can be serviced years later by the people who made it.

The work is a conversation between warm and cold. Solid walnut against machined aluminium, oiled timber against brushed metal, with the LED integrated into the body so the profiles stay as thin as the drawing. Nothing is hidden behind a shade that did not need to be there. These are fixtures that look like objects in daylight with nothing switched on, which is the real test of a lamp.

Integrated LED is a deliberate choice rather than a cost saving. It is what allows the geometry, and the modules are serviceable rather than disposable, with rated life measured in tens of thousands of hours. Most owners never think about it again.

Almost everything dims, and dimming is where the walnut and brass earn their place, because warm materials hold up at low output in a way cold ones do not. Pair them with a compatible LED dimmer rather than an old incandescent one, which is the usual cause of flicker in an otherwise good installation. The questions below cover LEDs, dimming and the timber.
