Cane-Line Furniture

Danish designers took outdoor furniture seriously about thirty years before anyone else did, and Cane-line is what that looks like now: terrace furniture built to the standards of indoor furniture, in materials that do not mind being rained on.

The weave is the signature. Cane-line's fibre is drawn to look like natural cane and behaves nothing like it, since it does not absorb water, rot, or need taking in. Beneath it, powder-coated aluminium frames that cannot rust and teak that silvers to a soft grey within a season. The cushions use quick-dry foam that drains a rain shower instead of holding it, which is the detail that separates furniture you use from furniture you keep covered.

What it buys you is a terrace that works in May and still works in October. Deep lounge seating you can leave out. Dining chairs that stack. Rope-woven pieces that read as soft from across a garden and take a hose when the pollen falls.

The teak will grey and the weave will need a brush along the grain twice a year. Neither is a fault; both are the price of furniture that lives outside rather than visiting. If you would rather keep teak honey-coloured, that is a cleaner and a sealer each spring and an afternoon of your time. Can Cane-line Furniture Stay Outside All Year?

The frames can. Powder-coated aluminium and teak are built to live outdoors permanently, and Cane-line's woven materials are designed for it too. Cushions are the exception: bring them in or store them dry over winter. In coastal or freezing climates, cover the furniture or store it, less because it will fail and more because it will stay looking new for longer.

How Do I Clean Cane-line Weave?

Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush, working along the weave rather than across it. Rinse and let it dry fully. The fibre does not absorb water, so it will not rot, but trapped dirt in the weave dulls the colour over time. Twice a year is enough for most gardens, more if you are under trees.

Will the Teak Turn Grey?

Yes, and that is normal. Untreated teak silvers within a season as the surface oxidises, with no loss of strength, because the oils that protect it are inside the timber. If you want the honey colour, clean and apply teak sealer each spring. If you leave it, the grey is even and many people prefer it.

Do the Cushions Need Storing Over Winter?

Store them dry if you can. Cane-line's quick-dry foam drains rather than holding water, so a rain shower is not a problem, but months of damp and cold shorten the life of any outdoor cushion. A ventilated box outdoors is fine; a sealed bag is not, because trapped moisture is what causes mildew.
