Ethnicraft Furniture

Ethnicraft is Belgian, and it builds in solid oak and solid teak rather than veneer over board. That one decision explains almost everything about the furniture: why it arrives heavy, why the grain runs through an edge instead of stopping at it, and why a table can be sanded flat and re-oiled in thirty years rather than thrown away.

The look is restrained to the point of being quiet. Thick tops, honest joinery, no decoration that is not structural. What carries it is the material. Oiled oak warms under your hand and darkens slowly with light. Teak goes deeper and richer indoors over the first year or two, then settles. An oiled finish shows the timber rather than sealing it behind plastic, which means it marks more easily and also that you can fix those marks yourself with fine abrasive and a cloth.

Two pieces in the same finish will not match exactly, and pieces bought years apart will differ more. That is solid wood behaving normally. It is the trade-off for furniture that can be repaired instead of replaced, and it is why these pieces tend to be the ones people take with them when they move.
