Scandinavian Furniture

Scandinavian furniture from the Danish makers who define the style: Fritz Hansen, Woud, Houe, Skagerak and Mater. Clean lines, honest materials and pieces built to be used for decades, for the dining room, living room, office and outdoors.

Scandinavian design, from the source

Scandinavian furniture grew from a simple idea: everyday objects should be beautiful, comfortable and made to last. Copenhagen's Fritz Hansen, founded in 1872, still makes Arne Jacobsen's Series 7 chair (1955) and Egg chair (1958), two of the most copied designs of the 20th century. What makes furniture Scandinavian?

  • Function first. Every line has a purpose; nothing is added for decoration alone.
  • Natural materials. Oak, ash, teak, wool, leather and rattan, finished to show the grain.
  • Light and calm. Pale woods and soft colours that make small rooms feel bigger.
  • Built to last. Designs made the same way for decades, and repairable rather than disposable.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Scandinavian Furniture Style?

Scandinavian furniture style is the design language that came out of Denmark, Sweden and Norway: light wood, clean lines, and function carried without ornament. It took shape in the 1930s and reached the wider world in the 1950s, when designers such as Arne Jacobsen and Hans Wegner proved that furniture made in quantity could still be worth looking at.

You recognise it by what it leaves out. Pale oak, ash and beech instead of dark, heavy timber. Tapered legs that lift a piece clear of the floor. Wool and linen in muted tones. Curves worked into moulded plywood so a chair holds you without appearing to try. Nothing is applied for decoration, because the joint, the grain and the shape are the decoration.

The reason it has lasted ninety years is that it was drawn for small northern homes with little winter light, which turns out to be much the same problem as a modern apartment.

What Defines Scandinavian Design?

Scandinavian design seamlessly combines simplicity, functionality, and elegance. It’s characterized by soft features that create warmth and life without cluttering the space.

Common elements in Scandinavian interiors include:

  • Clean Lines - Scandinavian design favors simple, uncluttered lines that create a sleek and modern look while maintaining an inviting atmosphere.
  • Natural Materials - Natural elements like wood, leather, and wool are frequently used to bring in warmth and texture.
  • Multifunctional Furniture - Designed with practicality in mind, Scandinavian furniture often serves multiple purposes like storage and comfort.
  • Blending Indoor and Outdoor Spaces - Large windows and natural light seamlessly connect indoor and outdoor environments, enhancing a sense of connectedness with nature.
  • Woven Rugs and Baskets - Textural accents like woven rugs and storage baskets add warmth, comfort, and functional organization to Scandinavian interiors.

What is the Difference Between Scandinavian and Nordic Design?

While often used interchangeably, Scandinavian and Nordic design styles have subtle differences.

Scandinavian design originates from Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, focusing on functionality, minimalism, and neutral colors.

Nordic design includes these countries but also Iceland and Finland, incorporating more playful colors and bold patterns.

How Do I Make My Home Look Scandinavian?

Making your home look Scandinavian comes down to the colors, furniture, and how you use your space. Here are some steps you can follow to achieve this style and make it your own:

  1. Use neutral colors like white, beige, and light gray as a base, and add natural elements such as wood and greenery to bring warmth and texture.
  2. Add some minimalist decor that avoids clutter while emphasizing clean lines and open spaces. Scandinavian wall art is a great way to incorporate soft focal points.
  3. Consider including textiles like wool throws and linen cushions to add texture and comfort.
  4. Maximize natural light by using sheer curtains and strategically placed mirrors to brighten the space.
  5. Choose furniture that is both functional and beautiful. Start with basic living room staples like the Nest Indoor Sofa or the Bok Coffee Table. Then, add storage pieces to stay true to the minimalist core of this design style. One of our favorite storage solutions is the Tray Shelf.

Quick Tip: When decorating with Scandinavian furniture, less is more. Focus on functional pieces and avoid overcrowding the space to maintain a clean, open feel.

What Color is Scandinavian Furniture?

Scandinavian furniture typically features neutral and muted colors, including shades of white, beige, gray, and light wood tones.

These colors create a bright and airy feel, reflecting the natural light of Nordic regions. For a touch of contrast, subtle pops of color in textiles and accessories can be added.

What Wood is Used in Scandinavian Furniture?

Scandinavian furniture often uses light woods such as pine, birch, and oak. These materials create a durable piece that can last for years with the proper care.

They also illuminate a natural, airy look that enhances minimalist designs. The natural grain and color variations add warmth and character to each piece. Browse our Scandinavian dining tables crafted from high-quality woods for timeless elegance.
